The famous Blue Hole located in Jericoacoara in Ceará is becoming more and more known around the world. What has been drawing more attention is the color of the turquoise water.

But do you know how it came about? Learn all about the blue hole in Jeri and schedule your trip to this beautiful and paradisiacal place.

First, know that the blue hole is located in Caiçara and did not exist until 2019. With this, the heavy rains in the region accumulated a lot of water, creating by chance, one of the most visited tourist spots in the Jericoacoara region with the color of the turquoise water. Giving even more beauty to the place and the water underwent tests in the capital of Ceará to know if it was suitable for bathing before being released to the public.

Therefore, the Caiçara Blue Hole or Jericoacoara Blue Well as some also call it, is quite new, created between August and September 2019.

Because Jericoacoara is the best-known village and beach in the region, many people link the blue hole to Jijoca. But Caiçara is a district of the city of Cruz, which is more or less 20 km from Jeri, which has been very popular with celebrities.

With the help of social networks, this lake quickly became popular through the sharing of photos and videos, mainly on Instagram. Tourists and travelers began to be curious and wanted to see the beautiful blue hole in Jericoacoara up close.

Another great highlight was the advertisement for the Renault Duster car made on the shores of the lake, where Brazilian actor Bruno Gagliasso starred, thus drawing the national attention and many tourists from other countries.

What to do in the Blue Hole?

You can enjoy this beautiful place by swimming, floating and enjoying the scenery. You have the option of going in the shallow end and using the nets – which is the most

In the deep part, it is possible to jump off the rocks and enjoy the dip in this beautiful water. The deepest places can reach up to 7 meters, so pay close attention and only jump if you have experience swimming. The place doesn’t have a lifeguard, so be careful with the kids.

Why is the blue hole the color of turquoise water?

What caught the attention of this place, for sure, was the tonality of the water, which is totally different from the traditional one seen in other lagoons found in Brazil. The origin of the turquoise color is because the soil that was excavated is very rich in limestone. Therefore, the sand on the bottom reflects with the sun, giving it this beautiful color that is difficult to describe.

What circulates in the place, is that the owner of the land where the blue hole is, had tests carried out in the water to know the quality and if it is fit for bathing. But this is local speculation among guides and agencies, however, there is no information on official channels and news sites to confirm this.

There is a restaurant that offers drinks and snacks, with prices not so low, but affordable. Last consultation in 2020 was: beer R$20, caipirinha R$15 and a delicious grilled fish fillet with shrimp sauce for R$45.

The other blue hole is located in Castelhano, there is also a bar with various snacks.

Tips for getting the most out of your tours

  • Visit São Francisco Street, the most famous and main street in Jeri, where you can find several options for tours. There are residents, drivers and agencies that offer it. Do your research to find the best value.
  • When taking the tour on the east side, choose not to include the Blue Hole. Because you have so many options, you will not enjoy the tour, as it will be very busy.
